Cannabinoids are the most prevalent chemicals in the cannabis plant. They consist of two main compounds, THC and CBD. While THC has gotten the most attention as it has the psychoactive component, CBD has no such effect and in fact, can reduce the effects of getting high from the THC. These two compounds together, along with their natural terpenes, can provide powerful medicine for many diseases. They can also help with many common ailments such as headaches, nausea and inflammation.
But how can they do this?
If one looks at how cannabinoids work, they can see that the chemicals they release actually mimic the natural chemicals we release in our body. Two forms exist, CB1 and CB2. Each of these has its own effects and when bound to the correct receptor, it can provide relief for a variety of diseases and pain.
As research and the cultivation of marijuana has matured, we are seeing new strains with different varieties of cannabinoids that prove helpful and can help isolate specific compounds to help specified diseases.
