Dried Flower (“Buds”) – A common way of ingesting cannabis is in its dried flower form in one of two ways.
Smoking is one of the most widely known and simplest methods of taking this medicine into your body, as well as having the quickest onset of effect. Smoking can be achieved by using a pipe or rolled cigarette. Often, even just one or two puffs are enough to provide the natural relief and effects of medical marijuana.
Vaporizing makes the active ingredients in cannabis available by heating the plant material to a certain temperature, which creates a fine inhalable mist, much like using an inhaler or nebulizer. It is a good choice for people who don’t want to inhale smoke into their lungs. The onset of effects is very rapid with vaporizing but it feels different to the body than smoking. There is no smoke and little odor. Vaporizing requires the use of a vaporizing device and cannabis oil.
Tinctures (Oils) Prepared in either alcohol or organic oils such as coconut or olive oil. Ingesting a tincture or drops of oil infused with medical cannabis is a very easy method of dosing the medicine. It has little cannabis odor, is easily transportable, is very discreet, and allows the patient to carefully control their dosage. Start with a small amount and gradually increase the dosage until you are comfortable with the relief you are experiencing. The effects take only a short while to present (15-20 minutes or longer depending on your metabolism) and have a subtle, long lasting effect that leaves the patient feeling body relief with a clear mental calmness.
Edible – Cannabis medicine can be taken in a wide variety of edible forms, including sweet or savory/salty foods and beverage products. Edible products or “Medibles” as they are sometimes known are a good choice for long-lasting relief. Most medibles use a preparation of cannabis in a fat (such as butter, olive oil or coconut oil), which is added to the food product. The effects of an edible dose of medicine take from 45 minutes to one hour to be felt, and can last for many hours. Foods prepared with medi-butter can provide long-lasting, effective relief for many conditions and symptoms. When medicating with edible products, remember that a little goes a long way and the effects can take up to an hour to be noticeable. Start with the suggested minimum dosage and wait at least one hour to feel the effects before ingesting more. Edibles are securely and safely packaged in accordance with Illinois law. It is still important to responsibly keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Topical – A topical is a cannabis product that is applied by the patient transdermally, or through the skin. Topical products include salves, balms, ointments and creams. Users often feel immediate, sometimes tingly relief to the location the medicine is applied with few of the “head” effects.
